Power operations and commutative ring spectra

Résumé : Commutative ring spectra are a homotopical generalization of classical commutative rings that allow a simultaneous treatment of classical rings, cobordism rings, and manifolds (with their product structure coming from their intersection pairing). These objects are difficult to classify though and this new notion of commutative structure is subtle. To keep track of this structure we employ power operations. After introducing power operations, we will give some computations of operations on relative smash products (derived tensor products) and interpret such computations. If time allows we will also discus how these computations relate to the cotangent complex.
